CARF-Models Mig 17 build thread
My Mig kit arrived here end of January, the shipping delays meaning it arrived during a period when I have been busy with other things. I used the time to get the last parts in place ready for the build to start properly early next month now.
All the first kits were done ARF-Plus where the factory install the landing gear, doors etc. Tail pipe and Fuel tanks. This will speed up the final assembly, especially the gear work done.
I ordered my kit with all the available accessories, cockpit with canopy slide system, light set and after it was shipped I decided I did want the wing tanks, so I have a set of those to make and paint to match.
I decided to go all in and order a Pilot from Tailored Pilots in the U.K…stunning job from Wilson and his team.
My equipment will be JetCat P-220Rxi fed from a MAP 6oz bubble trap, MacGregor and Savox servos (the stabs are designed for Savox 1261 servos. The main controls and Airbrakes will use MacGregor Brushless 8555 and doors 2810 MIDI servos. I plan to use a Powerbox Mercury (unless I swap to an SR2!) with Powerbox Li-On Rx batteries. All wire and connections will be Powerbox.
The landing gear uses Electron mechanism with CARF made legs and wheels.
The scheme I found was a display squadron trim added to a full scale metal finish aeroplane, there is little detail on the full size one available, but since I’m not entering scale competitions I was happy to have the affect. After the first pictures came of it clean I asked for the factory to do a light weather job on it as although the FS would have been pretty clean…Mig’s look better dirty!
I will add some more detail of my own just to add to the already incredible look.
I hope to have some free time this weekend to finish unpacking the kit and I will post more then.

I was involved in the project discussion which started back 2015/16. I formerly ordered it June 2021. Projects like this take years to do properly and making sure everything works reliably is a big time drain. When we first discussed the Mig the undercarriage was still a potential issue and CARF said they would not go ahead until they could be sure of reliable supply.
It’s a trainer, landing easy and light as a feather. It’s not demanding to operate like some scale models.

OK a little more time to look through the Mig. Lots of nice features some might not be aware of. No tools are needed to fit the wings…or join the fuselage front & back! Such clever design. The fuselage front and rear join on four carbon tubes, the large diameter ‘tube’ fuselage seats nicely without any fixing-the smart thing is the two wing tubes are split one in the front and one in the rear…this ties the fuselage together. Two thumb screw CARF nuts hold the wing on through the gear door. So clever!
The wings are huge, loads of area and massive landing flaps. That and the Airbrakes mean this will operate from the smallest fields. The main wheels are around 160mm dia!
I ordered the Afterburner set which includes TWO rings to ensure it’s bright enough to match the huge burn flame on the FS.
Fuel tanks are Velcro attached to factory installed mounts. Tanks feature CARF’s new fittings.

Little more ‘foreplay’ plugged the front and back together to do a quick turbine alignment check. It’s worth noting that CARF supply two foam cradles lined with felt to protect the paint.
Took the top covers off too…if you have big hands…it’s not an issue with this model.
the tailpipe mounting has numerous positions fore and aft to allow for different turbine lengths.

Ed should be flying by the summer Elvington.
There are 4 other scale jets in the hanger. Hope to get this and the A-10 flying this season

Hi Dave .. spoke with Ray and mine in the same scheme (weathered) will be air shipped to Danny (F1 Rocket).. The Rocket Factory (Danny’s shop) is ready to start on the MIG-17 when it arrives…. Mine will be equipped with a Jet Central Dragon (300N), MKS servos, Cortex pro and of course Jeti controls.. Look forward to a side by side built …

It really does not need a 300N turbine. It will fly on a 180N, with scale performance on a 220-235.
Danny will also have to do a lot of work to fit the larger turbine case, tank clearance, pipe position etc

Initial thought was just to use a Mercury. The gear doors are handled by the Electron controller so 15 outputs is plenty. But I might also use it as a reason to use an SR2 and iSat.
