Default CARF Ultra Flash Evo build thread +

10 years ago this week, (Monday actually) I started the thread and built the first UF and my plan was to start this thread on Monday...but the shippers didn’t get the memo and my kit has just come through the door. In reality the Bolt! build is behind but now it looks like I should have that finished for this weekend, so I can plan to start this next week...

The plan was hatched when Andreas and I were talking of schemes and we both said how awesome the Art Scholl scheme was, putting it on my favourite aeroplane just made sense.
Model with be powered by the JetCat P-130Rx and guided by my PB Core.
A taster...

That looks really good. Mine is built but I still look forward to seeing what you do as your construction threads are great. I know it is a pain to do them and I appreciate your efforts.

I always thought they reduce the questions asked...but the thousands of PM’s and emails over the years tells me that’s not necessarily the case 🙂
doing one 10 years later says a lot about the design, I talked with a friend last weekend who probably has more UF hours than anyone on earth (his first turbine died at 127 hours) and we agreed you never really get bored with one, fly fast, fly slow your choice.

Thanks Dave, it will be fun to watch your build. I have been flying mine more and like it more every time I fly it. really does a lot of things really well. I.m even happy with how my brakes work. All of your build advise you gave me were spot on.....much appreciated!

Kinda like an Ultra Flash rebirth! I only have 6 flights on my Evo, but not for a lack of like! I was flying so low and fast the last flight that birds on the ground were running for cover!

While the aeroplane was travelling from the factory I ordered the Art Scholl Super Chippy decal set from Callie Graphics over there, it has the sponsor list and other product logos which will really make the scheme.

The scheme will show up well. I’m going to use the CARF cockpit on this one rather than my normal ‘lazy’ tint 😉 Callie supplies an instrument decal in the set I ordered, so it can have Super Chippy instruments 😁

Looks good. Hope pennzoil doesn't send carf a cease and desist order like they did to great planes when they did the super chipmunk in that scheme.

OK, been clearing up a few other jobs after finishing the Bolt! but while I had the Dremel out and dust mask on I started cleaning up the canopy frame. Where there is tape on the join line it needs cleaning down to a level surface if you want a great fitting glass. Always use a fresh sanding drum, worn ones will just create heat and give an uneven surface. The back needs at least 1/2”, canopy hoop all the tape and front around 1/4” removing. It’s also worth running your finger around the whole gluing surface to feel for lumps or strands of glass. Clean these off too, but don’t go too far into the weave as this helps the glue to wick in if you tack the glass with Slo Zap like me.

Someday I hope they offer a painted version (like the Rebel) for these planes with the canopy glass..... good to start with that job Dave, get it out of the way!

I want to add the cockpit tub to this one since it’s in this ‘Scale’ scheme
I don’t like the painted look on these canopies, I have customers who paint the clear with a solid colour and I think it looks terrible!
Easy job on the UF since the screen is small. Try a CARF Tucano!

Having cleared some other jobs I grabbed some time in the workshop earlier tonight and started looking at the install.
The carbon bell mouth is flared so you can either radius the ply former, or trim it off. My chosen JetCat P-130Rx is so much smaller than the original turbines the mount perfectly fits between the rails, so spreader plates will be made.
The new Evo tank mounts are factory fitted, shelf at the front and Velcro loop at the rear. The baffle has holes to drain fuel from front to back.
I’m using the JP retracts, it’s nice the wing is moulded to shape around the leg.

Having considered which servos to use I realised I had ‘squirrelled’ away a set of JR servo suitable for the UF, since all the Flash/UF models I have ever built have used JR servos I decided to stick with my usual approach, the light 8411’s in the tail will help with no nose weight too 🙂

It will certainly drain all the fuel from the ‘sump’ lower section.

I got to fly mine against a non-EVO with a 140N turbine just like mine. It's amazing the speed difference. He had an easy 20-25mph on me. Might have to put my 170 in mine

Thrust of turbine is not the critical thing for speed, the different diameter turbines have a large efflux speed difference and over a certain thrust to overcome drag this helps speed. I have a friend with a std Ultra Flash and JetCat 130. We will be able to do an exact comparison

Just finished my Art Scholl Evo!
The maiden will have to wait a few weeks as lockdown won't allow us to travel further than 5km from home.
10.8kg with bubble trap full.
With
Jetcat 140rxi
Jetcat smoke pump
JR 8411's
CMjets 4lt fuel tank
Wing tank for smoke
Cortex Pro
Can't wait to see how she compares to my 5yr old Ultra Flash Mclaren Scheme will definitely be more visible in the air.
