Hi together,
@ Jeremy: thank you for the offer concerning the 8611 !
actually I can get another 8511 from the german dealer who I bought the first one a couple of months ago ( Modellbau Hillenbrand )
it will cost some 100 bucks, but I really need this old type of JR servo to match Tom`s precise geometry on that massive PCU alu frame and also to match his custom linkage parts
@ George: P220 - well now that sounds like some real fun - the airframe can accept that power, for sure !

And, 24 hours after the first power up, everything is working just perfectly now ( except the 8511 of course )
Exchanged the two doors feeding connectors ( closed vs open ) and luckily, found my leak - it was in one of the DuBro 1/8" quick connectors that I fitted to the gear lines in order to take out the gears if necessary
You see them in the pics of previuos posts. I just pushed in one line a tad too little !! Shame on me !
see you
Hans

Hi all,
And getting closer to the final layout - I do like the "analog mechanics" here - old school but beautiful in my eyes !
see you
Hans

PS: the JR 8511 is on its way - perfect !

Hello Hans,
Good to be on here with you. All I can say so far on your build is this. If the majority of the builders still out there were even close to your level, there would be a lot more serious design work going on. Sadly, most are unwilling for many reasons to commit to excellence in all phases of our hobby. I always keep a watch for your photos on the Hustler build. Tom

This jet is super cool. The retracts and gear doors look very complicated but extremely well done by the designer and builder.
Could Electron gear and servos for the doors be used instead?

Hi all,
Of course such a conversion would be doable - shall I really amend here - It is doable, same way as a conversion of a Jaguar E-type to a fully electric car !
With other words, would it make sense ? I really don`t know
Personally, I like this mechanical set up - it is inline with the layout of the whole airplane, say traditional !
see you
Hans

PS: @ Tom : I only accept your roses after Hustler has proven to be a wonderful flyer - still a long way to go here !

Hi all,
And after the JR 8511 arrived, I completed the air system today - everything is working perfectly now !
Also, plumbing up the pretty complex fuel and smoke system is done
The smoke pump will get the fuel from the air trap unit which is embeded in the center tank. I will only install the stainless smoke tubes once I have the turbine mounted
The sticks will have to be correctly located into the hot exhaust/jet stream
Turbine fuel will get to the yet to be installed fuel pump via the new style air trap tank mounted on the big central board
Also, I have produced another platform above the centertank in order to mount the turbine accessories later on
I must take care about the CG here - the turbine will be much lighter that the originally used AMT Pegasus and hence, I have to take care not to end up too nose heavy !
Next and final work is to hook up and programm the avionics - once this is done, Hustler will receive its final livery and then goes into storage until the turbine funds are released by the CFO ( say my wife )
Decision on which turbine remains to be determined !
see you
Hans

Hi all,
And finally the avionics have been set up !
It is a very traditional set up using the Weatronic 12 channel rx with integrated 3-axis gyros and the Futaba MSA-10 Multi Servo Adjuster for the flaps
I did one special conversion - I took away the big power consumers ( say all the flight control servos ) from the rx - just the signal lines are connected to the rx from these servos
They will get the amps from a seperate 5cell eneloop 2500 mah NiMh pack ( 6 volts min )
The rx plus Tom`s PCU and the nosewheel steering servo are powered by a 4cell 2000 mah eneloop pack ( only 5 volts because of the JR 8511 )
I know, I do not gain any redundancy by this set up but the eneloops have proven to be very reliable and I have eased my mind by avoiding to run all the servo power through the rx
Powerconsumption of so many flight control servos acting with gyros has to be taken into account here (my experience just shows that they really need a lot when gyros come into play ! )
see you
Hans

PS: - mailed Gaspar from Xicoy recently - ohh yes, a 230N motor from his side is in the works !!!
- And the stickers to make Hustler complete except turbine are on order - not long before the final pics ( and before Hustler goes into hybernation again ! )

Hi All,
Thank you Tom Jenkins for your compliment !
Thought I would add some more pics of this beautiful jet - I am still blown away on what exquisite plane Tom Cook designed and and fabricated so many moons ago !
Yes, it is a complex airframe ( easy to get it flight ready on the flightline though ! ), but the fully enclosed gears and these fluent lines make it really standing out !!
Today I completed the set up of the 3-axis gyros - as usual here, I give the rudders and nose wheel steering more authority that the elevators and the ailerons
It is a bad experience to have a jet like this starting to oszillate in the roll and pitch axices !
I will start with low gains and then increase to the point where it just does not oszillate to have the max benefit of those little helpers
Of course, the gains will be adjusted to pre - programmed levels in my different flight modes
LAND - slow speed - high gain
TAKEOFF - medium speed - medium gain
CLEAN - high speed - low gain
Unfortunately, I have to control the gain on my tx with only one knob for all the three gyros - just too little channels left on the 12 channel tx/rx combo to do it independently
I will manage
see you
Hans

Hi all,
And while waiting for the decals to be made, another little flyer has taken over my hobby room - giant honey bee !!
I do like her very much ! She is made out off laser cut cardboard and readily assembled within 30 min
Pics of Hustlers final appearance soon here
see you
Hans

Hi all,
And I took Hustler out of its hybernation status in order to do some upgrades :
- after selling my big Kranz Bf 109 G6, the second big weatronic rx in my stock ( first one is in Firebird ) became available for Hustler
- It is a much more contemporary unit that offers a lot of possibilities and, of course, a fully redundant power supply
- unfortunately, this unit has only 2 internal gyros - so I had to add an i-gyro for the yaw axies ( say the two rudders and the nosewheel steering ) - it works perfectly and will keep the model
straight, especially during T/O and landing rolls
- furthermore, I applied the stickers to the airframe and Hustler now looks very similar to my Firebird - I do like the racing style looks !
- Gaspar is still working on his X225 turbine - it is on preorder from my side and I do hope that it will be available for the 2023 season starting in spring
- I will install the smoke tubes preliminerary so that only the turbine install will have to be done once I can put my hands onto the motor !

- some pics here - please enjoy !

Hello all,
And my brother and me completed that preliminary smoke plumbing today.
Final adjustment will have to be done after the turbine sits in its place of course.
The stainless 4mm tubes are fixed ( torque and axial wise ) by the collars. The collars are glued onto these little wood/carbon plates and then the plates are screwed onto the backward former ( as seen in the pics )
The pipes run internally and exit at the backside of the fuselage :
I did not make teflon sleeves yet where the tubes exit the fuselage, hoping that the tubes will not heat up to an amount at this far back from the jetstream which might burn the glass/epoxi structure there - we will see !
I will have to buy a specialzed clamp to produce tight safety wire connections of the tygon lines toward the stainless tubes and the Y-divider also !
Thats it for now !
And yes, late I am, but I wish each and everyone a healthy and successful 2023 !!
see you
Hans

Hi all,
And some bad news here :
I mailed Gaspar in order to get some news on the status of his X225 - he immediately replied, but not with the info that had hoped for !
The X225 is delayed until at least mid 2023 - primarily due to supply chain constraints for electronic items and some high workload due to big demand for his existing motors
Now that means that Hustler will go into hybernation mode again ( I will not consider any other turbine option for Hustler and Firebird ! )
So, all my other models will be happy - they will get more flying time !
see you
Hans

Hi all,
And I could not live with Gaspar`s announcement and let another flying season just pass by !
I am getting 65 of age in August 2023, so time becomes really a factor when flying fast jets !
I activated plan B and got into discussons with Alan from Jets Munt turbines
They have a trade in programm for used motors and since I had a hardly used M140XBL in my inventory, we closed a deal - trade in the 140XBL and get a M250XBL instead !
Jets Munt still bears the technology and philosophy from Gaspar and has alwyas been my close second joice !
Just today the M250XBL arrived in my hobby room - what a wonderful piece of engineering and manufacturing it is !
Held in place onto Hustler`s mounting rails - perfect fit it is gona be !
And then also, it will be a perfect fit into Firebird`s full ducting system as well, using the same mounting threads and mounting lugs !
I am very excited about all this
Not long before I will install the motor in Hustler ( first, I have to complete the tail feathers for my scratch built Fokker D VIII in 1/5 scale )
see you
Hans

I do like the Festo fuel line connector beeing positioned at the 6 o`clock position - fuel line will NOT be visible !

and here the complete opposite to Hustler - light, slow and old !

Hi all,
And this big block turbine has found its place in Hustler !
I do like the clean installation which is possible with these integrated motors. In my case, not even a fuel line comes into sight ! Also, the smoke tubes are as reserved as possible
I routed the electric cable away from the intake area and fixed it on the side with my very trusty clamps - they will hold up to the airflow, promised !
Programming and set up should be an easy task - I do not see any hurdles when I go through the manual and with that nice little LCD data terminal every step looks evident to me
see you
Hans

Ahh, yes - the Fokker`s tailfeathers are complete and hooked up - taxi runs convinced me that I will be able to control this little one on the ground ( with a big help of the yaw gyro of course )

Yes, it has a rotary dummy in there !

Hi all,
And here is the final installation !
Wrapped that childish, multicolored turbine cable with some black, flex net protection tubing
Then I exchanged the tygon tubing on the smoke pumps pressure side to PU tubing - much better ! No tygon on the pressure lines they say !
Everything concerning the turbine has been run ( say pump, starter, valves and the 2 burners ) and all systems work flawlessly !
So, next will be weight and balance ( easy with Toms templates ) and then out to the flight line for live system tests and taxi runs - I never do a maiden upon the first outing !
see you
Hans

Hello Tom,
I really hope you are doing well at this time !!
Hustler`s progress is a total pleasure to me and I strongly believe that it belongs to the categories of planes that just have to fly
well - just too much engineering ( from your side ) and work involved ( from my side ) to guess anything else !
A big thumbs up for your work on all that hardware - it is still and absolutely the gold standard, even after bringing it to market after all those years !
I guess that Hustler will end up with requiring quite some lead in the nose to reach your projected CG though - well, not a problem here, it will accept any weight easily for sure !
I am a happy pal
see you
hans
