RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Well Hobbsy, I finally got to run my .45 on the new test stand. Here are the numbers.
Temp. 26f +/-
Fuel. wildcat 15%, 18%oil
prop. MA 12x5
peak 10,300 richened to about 10,000...pulled 4lbs 7oz on the "thrust meter"
I would say the load is about right for this engine. I do have a couple of concerns that you may be able to help me with. i couldn't get it to idle as low as I thought it would. I got it down to 2300-2400 rpm, but it wasn't smooth. If I increase rpms to about 2800 it runs much smoother...is this "normal" for a .45 MK2? It also seems to be pushing a lot of oil out the front. After burning 6 oz of fuel, there was a puddle under the thing about 2" in diameter, and the nose of the engine was soaked. When I first got the engine it felt a little rough when turning over, but smoothed out when I oiled it up. Do you think it might be worth going ahead and doing the bearings?
PS. i don't have a pipe for this, and didn't want to run it streight out of the head, so I took the 10mm bolt that I bought to check the threads in the head and drilled out the center (about 1/4") and threaded that into the head. It's about 1-1 1/4" long. I don't know how that would affect the tuning, or the numbers. The tank was unpressurized.

Rex, PM me an address and I'll send you a pipe, it should idle about 2,000 with no sweat. LS needle must be too rich still. Those are excellent HS numbers. Is it new?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Thanks for the offer, but about an hour after I posted, I got a package from Horizon with a new pipe and some other odds and ends. I'll have to run it tomorrow with the pipe on it. i tried to lean it out more, but it would quit on me, so I opened the low speed back up. When I pinched the fuel line shut, it just quit with no discernable change in rpm. Is that right? or should it speed up a little before it quits? Any ideas on all the oil it's pushing through the front? It was definitely used and probably has a good bit of fuel through it. I've never seen a low speed adjustment like it has. It has a knurled brass wheel on the low speed. Are they all like that? When I put on the muffler, I'll run it with pressure from the exhaust and see if it makes a difference. The fuel level was a little above the spray bar for most of the run. I had the tank a little high because I was worried about drawing fuel with no pressure. I was probably even at 1/4 tank height.

I always thought that the low speed should speed up just a little before it quit during the pinch.
If you get the idle mixture to where it runs the fastest and smoothest - then when you give it the throttle, they will quit. So the idle has to be just rich enough so the engine doesn't quit when you give it the throttle.

That's what I remember everyone saying, so i don't know why it won't idle lower. I'll re-adjust after I put the pipe on. Hopefuly it will idle down better with a pipe and muffler pressure.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi all
I have just got a Saito 125 GK.
I have a few questions I need answered.
1. Looking for a 90 degree muffler adapter along with a short (approx 100 mm) extension. I need to mount the exhaust behind the motor and side space is limited on the plane (approx 21mm) so I need a tight bend.
2. How will an exhaust extension affect performance?
3. Going to use a Perry pump since I plan to put the tank on the CG - any issues known by anyone?
Many thanks for any replies
Jeremy

Exhaust extensions do not bother four strokes
A Cline regulator works more reliable than a pump. But people do use the vibration type Perry pump

Thanks for the link.
Excuse my ignorance but how will a regulator like the CLine provide reliable fuel supply to the motor as opposed to a pump?? My thinking is to pump fuel to the carb as opposed to regulating the fuel flow??
Thanks

With the regulator, you use muffler pressure through a check valve to pressurize the tank and force fuel to the regulator mounted right beside the needle valve.
The regulator is a demand regulator. It passes no fuel unless the engine has a suction on the fuel inlet line.

I just aquired a 120 with some hours on it. It starts and reponds well to the low end needle, but my problem is the high end needle I can go from 1.5-3.5 out with really no change in the rpms......it is all at its peak of around 9200 15x6 Ev prop. I am @ 5000 ft (it is 40deg)
It it kind of a dog on this showtime 90.........
Thanks

I just got my first Saito
A beautiful Saito 100. It is waiting for a Phoenix Models Extra 330S 60 size on order from Tower.
Any recommendations on break-in? Or should I just follow the instruccions? I tried reading this thread to see if I could find something but it's ridiculously big! I tried a search and nothing. Thanks in advance!

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
hi all i just got my first saito. a used fa 120. there is no s on it and the cylinder ribs extend over the cam block. this may help i.d. the year or model. It runs great but the compression is weak. is this normal or should i change the ring. i did adjust the valves and they seem in good order.
thanks

It's the early model of which there were a few variations.
You can get a ring from Frank Bowman

Are you sure the compression is actually weak? the throttle needs to be wide open when spinning the motor to get compression. All of these Saitos feel like they have weak compression when spun with the throttle closed.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
i ran it last night, its strong when wet. its an older engine and the gunk just poured out of it for 2 tanks of fuel. it sat for a few years. it definatly needs a bearing job, but a smooth runner she is. thanks.
