As others have observed, the rear cover or backplate has been installed incorrectly. Unbolt it and insert it with the flat that has been machined in it uppermost so that the piston clears when rotated over bottom dead cernter.
As for the starter spring, remove it and throw in the bin. You do not need it for a Merlin diesel plus it will never work as you have put it on and doubt it is an original item, probably off a different engine.

I got a GWS SLOW STICK which I think is close to APS Tomboy, problem is the kit is tailored for electric operation and I want to try it using my DC Merlin engine. Any thoughts or ideas how to do this? Thanks.

Other than having wings, wheels and a fuselage-it is NOTHING like a Tomboy. Why do you persist in taking such poor decisions in your choices.? I note-on your own admission-that you are in Toronto-a simple google check reveals that there are at least several model aero clubs in the Toronto area...instead of asking inane questions on here-how about you make contact with any of these clubs and get some one -on-one help. see: https://www.maac.ca/en/clubs_by_zone.php?zone_code=L
